We often see food photos and think “that looks sooo good” only to trytaking photos of our own food and resulting with “it tasted much better than it looks”.
There is no doubt that for many of us self-titled “foodies”, we wish wecould take photos that look as good as our meals tasted, so with that in mind, today’s tips will focus on getting our food photos “Mmm Mmm…better”.
Getting lower is the first thing that I would say to anyone trying to takea better food photo. Why? Well, it’s easy. By getting lower, add more texture to your photo as light comes across the food. Ideally, you are sitting at adecently lit place (window light can be great for food photography) and bygetting low you add that much needed texture that makes the food not look flat, slimy and boring. Additionally, you get the added benefit of less table moreenvironment in your shot making it feel more welcoming in general.
If getting low doesn’t do it for you, and you want to focus on the presentation, getting high is what you want. Standing on a chair looking straight down and getting high above the food shifts the focus off just thefood to the presentation of the food and the table around it. Make sure you have a clean table and uncrumpled napkins for this. FYI: Getting high above your food without a wide angle lens may be hard to do, and standing on your chair is generally frowned upon in establishments that require you to wear shirts.
You got down, you got high, and yet something seems to be missing? It’stime to get in. Pick a part of the food and focus on it. Generally, a shallow depth of field is what you want with food, but when you get close, you have to make sure your DoF is enough to encompass, or at least hint at all the important elements of that dish. Getting a beautiful photo of the cherry on the sundae is great, but not so much if you can’t tell there is a sundae in the photo at all.
